Boosting the dividends of Africa's democratization process: Euphrasie YAO appeals to actors in the chain of decision in Cotonou

Invited by the Regional Program Africa and West Asia International IDEA (AWA / IDEA), Euphrasia KOUASSI YAO, Special Advisor of the President of the Republic, in charge of gender, participated from November 10 to 12, 2017 in Cotonou, Benin. Regional Political Dialogue on "Three decades of democratic transition in Africa: What dividends for citizens?"
The launch of this dialogue included eight speeches including (i) Ambassador Dr Boubacar Issa Abdourahmane, Representative of OIF to the AU and ECA, (ii) Professor Adebayo Olukoshi, AWA Regional Director / IDEA and (iii) His Excellency Théodore Holo, President of the Constitutional Court of Benin.
For three (3) days, Presidents of institutions of governance and management of the democratic process, former and current members of government, high-level African experts, representatives of international and regional organizations, including the African Union, the Foundation for Capacity Building in Africa (ACBF), the International Organization of La Francophonie and the African Development Bank have conducted collective reflections for a better democratization of Africa.
Seven panels in total furnished this meeting, including Panel 4 on "Inclusion, Diversity Management and Equity in African Countries for Three Decades", on which the Special Adviser to the President of the Republic intervened. in the afternoon of Friday, November 10, 2017.
This panel was an opportunity to demonstrate that the "gender and development" approach is an indispensable instrument to boost the dividends of the process of democratization of Africa to citizens. For that, Euphrasia YAO insisted on the need to train all the actors of the chain of decision to this approach since the high level decision-makers to the communities while passing by the actors of the development. The aim is to systematize the implementation of intervention that integrates gender, ie who: compares the situation of women and men, identifies the sources of gender inequalities and defines the strategies that aim to reduce these inequities in a perspective of equity and diversity management.
To illustrate her remarks, she shared the experience of two major projects developed by Côte d'Ivoire from the "Gender and Development" approach and which have enabled the country to register major achievements. These include the projects of "management of village water systems improved by men and women leaders in rural areas for the sustainability of drinking water" whose results have earned Côte d'Ivoire a Medal of 'Or at the 6th International Water Symposium in Cannes in Paris in 2004 and a Unesco Chair on Water and Gender' 'UNESCO Chair in Water, Women and Decision Making' 'in 2006.
And also, the Compendium of Women Skills Program of Côte d'Ivoire, initiated by HE Mr. Alassane OUATTARA, President of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, which contributes to creating an environment conducive to strengthening the participation of women in the decision-making process. management and governance both at the national and local levels, whose initial results have favored the appointment of women to decision-making positions and the election of women to the 2016 Legislative Assembly.
